WHY MY HAIR NOT RETAINING LENGTH?

Throughout my natural journey, in the beginning, I was using excessive heat on my hair & was wondering why my hair wasn’t retaining much length.  When I removed direct heat from my hair regimen I've been able to retain my length and noticed my hair is retaining most of its length beside the split ends I trim off during a trim time.  Using my length check shirt I probably get about  1/4-1/2 of an inch trimmed off; unless I need more.  If you’re not already doing this you can add some of these tips into your hair care regimen to help you to retain length.

  • Trimming- you're either not trimming at all or not getting trims when needed.  Not getting trims regularly the split end will continue to split up the hair shaft.   I recommend fine texture hair to get trims 6-8 weeks and coarse texture hair to get them 8-10 weeks.

  • Using excessive heat- you flat iron or blow-dry your hair too often.  Cut down on using direct heat on your hair and opt for heatless styles.

  • Moisture/protein balance is off- you maybe be experiencing too much moisture or not enough protein or vice versa.  You need to keep your hair moisture/protein levels balance by making sure your using the correct product’s and doing protein treatment when needed.

  • Over manipulating hair- you maybe styling your hair too often.  Choose styles that will last at least 7-10 days & are low maintenance styles.

  • Not protecting hair while sleeping- sleeping on cotton pillowcase can cause hair to dry out.  Make sure to protect your hair while sleeping in a satin scarf, bonnet or pillowcase.
